Sand the Crate

We’ve said it once but we’ll say it again, the unfinished wood items that you can get from the craft store are genius crafting shortcuts. But you do need to remember that they are unfinished pieces, meaning that they require a little bit of prep work. For the best possible results, sand down the wood crate paying enough attention to any jagged or rough sections. It will make the paint job look that much better. Once you’re done sanding completely, wipe the dust off the crate with a clean cloth.

Paint the Crate

Using your craft paint and a clean paintbrush, paint the entire surface of the crate. With the way the project will be displayed, you need to paint the inside of the crate as well. Pay attention to the edges of the slats too. You don’t want to leave any little bit uncovered. While you can choose whatever craft paint you want, it might be smart to consider a darker color. It will help the numbers pop, but it will also stay looking clean, too. Even just considering the dirt from the plants and the grime from the outdoor elements, a darker paint will hide imperfections a lot better. Once it’s completely covered, let the paint dry thoroughly before moving on to the next step.

Add the Numbers

This step is more simple than you might think. The hardest part is getting the cover off of the adhesive backing. Most house numbers come with a powerful peel and stick adhesive for hanging. Before you stick them on, decide where you want the numbers. You can place them on either side or the middle; play around with the design a little bit before you commit. When you’re ready, peel the backing off and press them firmly onto the surface of your crate.

Add the Plants

You’re almost there; here’s the fun part. Choose your favorite plants and place them into the crate—just keep the placement of your container in mind. You don’t want to plant something in the shade if it needs full sun to survive. The real beauty here is that you can pull the plants out if you need to, swap in seasonal options, or even take them in if there’s inclement weather. It’s just so much cooler than just sticking new numbers up! Once your number box is complete, hang it on the house using whatever method is best for your exterior.
